Zinda Chess: Living Pieces, Film-Style Captures and Full Chess That Works Offline
Pawns that blink, knights that leap and captures that freeze on impact, on top of a full-rules chess game that runs without signal or sign-up.
Most chess on a phone makes you choose. The plain apps are correct and quick, but the board looks like a spreadsheet with pieces on it. The playful-looking ones are lively right up until you notice they are a toy rather than the real game. And plenty of both want an account and a working connection before they let you move a pawn, which is no help on a train, on a flight, or anywhere the signal drops.
We built Zinda Chess for the player in between: someone who wants real chess with the full rules, a computer opponent that can be tuned to their level and a deep supply of puzzles, but who would enjoy all of it more if the board felt like something was happening on it. Zinda is the Hindi and Urdu word for alive, and our tagline for the game is "Chess, but alive."
It is free to download on Android and has no ads today. The whole offline side, from games against the computer to a 60-level campaign, 50,000 puzzles and your streaks, runs with no account and no internet. Online play against real people is there as well, for adults who sign in.
Key takeaways
- Every piece is an animated character, and a capture can play as a short film scene; tap anywhere to skip it, or switch the cinematics off.
- Underneath the animation is a full-rules chess game, not a simplified toy.
- Offline play needs no account and no connection: a computer opponent with 15 strength levels, a 60-level campaign, Pass & Play and 50,000 puzzles.
- Online play, from rated matches to friend games by code and weekly leagues, is for adults aged 18 and over and needs a sign-in.
- It runs on Android 7.0 or newer. iPhone is planned but not available yet.
Pieces that act like characters
Pawns breathe and blink. Knights leap. Kings panic when they are in check. In the themes we call Zinda Originals, every piece is a character with a face that moves and reacts, so the state of the game shows up in the pieces themselves, not only in where they stand. A king under threat looks like a king under threat.
Captures are where this goes furthest. A capture can play as a small film: the action drops into slow motion, the camera zooms in, and the frame freezes on impact. Each character theme fights in its own way, so the same capture looks quite different in one theme than in another. When a move deserves an audience, you can share a clip of it.
None of it is compulsory. Tap anywhere and the scene skips. If you would rather have the game without the show, the cinematics can be turned off altogether. Either way it is a real, full-rules chess game; the animation sits on top of the rules and never replaces them, which is what separates it from the toy-like apps it might resemble at first glance.
What works with no signal and no account
Offline is not a cut-down mode in Zinda Chess. Games against the computer, the campaign, the puzzles and your streaks all work with no account and no internet connection. You install the app and play; nothing asks you to sign in first, and nothing stops working when the signal goes.
- vs Computer: 6 difficulty tiers and 15 strength levels.
- Campaign: 60 levels across 6 worlds, with 6 bosses.
- Pass & Play: two players sharing one phone.
- Puzzle World: Puzzle Path, Daily Puzzle, Streak mode, Rush practice and 6 boss packs.
For a lot of players this is the deciding detail: a commute through dead zones, a long flight, a phone with no data left, or simply not wanting yet another login. Because the offline side needs no account, there is nothing to set up and nothing to hand over before your first game.
A computer opponent and a campaign with bosses
The vs Computer mode gives you 6 difficulty tiers and 15 strength levels. That spread matters more than it sounds. A computer opponent is only useful if you can find the setting where you win some games and lose others, then move it up once you stop losing. With fifteen levels to choose from, you can feel your way up gradually instead of jumping between an opponent you always beat and one that always beats you.
The campaign turns that progression into a route: 60 levels spread across 6 worlds, with 6 bosses to beat along the way. Like the rest of the offline side, it needs no account and no connection, so you can pick it up on a commute and carry on later from wherever you are.
Pass & Play covers the other offline situation: two people and one phone. Hand the phone across the table after each move and you have a full game of chess, with the full rules and the same living pieces, without either of you creating an account or finding a network.
Puzzle World: 50,000 puzzles, all of them offline
Puzzle World holds 50,000 puzzles, and every one of them works offline. You reach them through five ways in: Puzzle Path, Daily Puzzle, Streak mode, Rush practice and 6 boss packs. That gives the same large collection room to fill two spare minutes with a daily puzzle or a long evening working through a pack.
Streaks are kept offline too, so a daily habit does not break on a day without data. Rush practice is the offline counterpart to Ranked Puzzle Rush, the online mode with a weekly top 10, which means you can get comfortable with the rush format privately before putting a score where other players can see it.
Playing real people online
Online play adds real opponents, and it is for adults: you need to be 18 or over and signed in. Once you are, these are the ways to play:
- Quick Match: rated games against real players.
- Play a Friend: join by a 6-letter code or an invite link.
- Friends list: challenge someone you have already added.
- Ranked Puzzle Rush: with a weekly top 10.
- Weekly league and leaderboards.
We designed the online side to be friendly. Chat is ready-made messages only, so there is no free-text box and nobody can type insults at you mid-game. You still get a way to say something to your opponent; you just cannot be abused by one.
Four themes today, each with its own way to fight
The current version, 1.3, ships with four Zinda Originals themes, all with living pieces and capture cinematics:
- Sketchbook: living pencil characters on paper whose eyes follow your finger. Captures are comic-book style, KABOOM included.
- Sumi-e Ink: calm brush-and-ink pieces with samurai strikes, enso circles and a vermilion seal on every capture.
- Battle Toons: cartoon warriors armed with swords, hammers and wands.
- My Arena: build your own, choosing the board, heroes, weapons and sounds.
Themes are personal even in online games. Each player sees the game in their own theme, so you can play in Battle Toons while your opponent plays the very same game in Sumi-e Ink. Nobody has to compromise on the look they chose.
For players who want a normal, quiet board, five classic themes are coming soon in version 1.4, which is built and in testing. They drop the cinematics for calm, quick play with real-board sounds, in looks ranging from maple and walnut wood to a dark Midnight board for late-night games.
