Zinda Chess: Full-Rules Chess on Android With No Account or Internet
Our Android chess game, where every piece is a living character, keeps its computer opponent, campaign and puzzles on your phone, so a lost signal never ends a game.
Open a typical chess app on a train, on a flight or in a basement with no signal and you find out quickly how much of it lives on someone else's server. The puzzle won't load, the daily streak breaks, and a sign-up screen arrives before the first move. For a game that has always needed nothing more than a board and two players, that is a lot to ask.
There is a second, quieter problem. On a phone screen, a perfectly correct chess board can still feel like a spreadsheet: squares, symbols, and a capture that is just a piece disappearing. Players who want something with more life in it usually end up with a game that isn't really chess.
Zinda Chess is our answer to both. It is a full-rules chess game for Android in which every piece is a living character, and the computer opponent, the campaign, the puzzles and your streaks all run on the phone with no account and no internet. Zinda is the Hindi and Urdu word for alive, which is where our tagline comes from: chess, but alive.
Key takeaways
- Offline play needs no account and no connection: games against the computer, a 60-level campaign, Pass & Play, and 50,000 puzzles with streaks.
- It is real, full-rules chess, with 6 difficulty tiers and 15 strength levels against the computer.
- Pieces breathe, blink and react, and captures play as short film scenes that you can skip with a tap or switch off entirely.
- Online play is for adults (18+) with a sign-in, and chat uses ready-made messages only.
- It runs on Android 7.0 or newer, is free to download and has no ads today.
Everything that runs with no account and no internet
Offline in Zinda Chess is not a demo or a cut-down practice mode. Four of the ways to play need neither a sign-in nor a connection, and between them they cover nearly everything a single player, or two people sharing one phone, would want from a chess game:
- vs Computer, with 6 difficulty tiers and 15 strength levels.
- Campaign: 60 levels across 6 worlds, with 6 bosses.
- Pass & Play: two players on one phone.
- Puzzle World: Puzzle Path, Daily Puzzle, Streak mode, Rush practice and 6 boss packs.
Streaks are on that offline list too, and that matters more than it sounds. A daily habit that breaks because a train went into a tunnel is a habit people stop keeping. In Zinda Chess the games, the campaign, the puzzles and the streaks all stay on the phone, so an account only enters the picture when you decide to play other people.
Real chess against the computer, at 15 strength levels
Living pieces and film-style captures could suggest a toy. Zinda Chess isn't one: it plays full-rules chess, and the presentation sits on top of a complete game rather than replacing any part of it. If the animation ever gets in the way of thinking, the cinematics can be switched off and the chess underneath is exactly the same.
The computer opponent comes with 6 difficulty tiers and 15 strength levels, which gives you room to find a level that offers a real game and to step up as you improve. Pass & Play covers the other common offline situation: two people, one phone, taking turns at the same board, with no account needed for either of them.
A 60-level campaign and 50,000 offline puzzles
The campaign gives offline play a direction. Its 60 levels are spread across 6 worlds, with 6 bosses to beat, so a session against the computer has a goal beyond the next game. Because the campaign needs no account, working through it doesn't depend on a connection either: it is as playable at thirty thousand feet as it is at home.
Puzzle World is the larger offline library, with 50,000 puzzles that all work without internet. They are organised into Puzzle Path, the Daily Puzzle, Streak mode, Rush practice and 6 boss packs. When you want to measure yourself against other people, the online side adds a ranked Puzzle Rush with a weekly top 10; Rush practice, offline, needs neither an account nor a signal.
For someone who mostly plays in short gaps in the day, this is the part that matters most. A puzzle habit only survives if the puzzles are there every time you open the app, and keeping all 50,000 on the phone, alongside the streak that tracks them, is how we make sure they are.
Pieces that breathe, and captures that play like film
In Zinda Chess every piece is a character, with a face that moves and reacts to the game. Pawns breathe and blink, knights leap, and kings panic when they are in check. In the Sketchbook theme, the pencil-drawn pieces follow your finger with their eyes as you move it across the board.
Captures get the biggest treatment. Each one can play as a short film: slow motion, a camera zoom and a freeze-frame on the moment of impact. Each character theme fights in its own way, so a capture in Sketchbook and the same capture in Sumi-e Ink are different scenes.
Not everyone wants a scene every time a pawn falls, so there are two ways out. Tap anywhere and the scene is skipped. Switch the cinematics off and they stop altogether, leaving a straight game of chess with the living pieces still on the board.
Four themes now, five classic boards coming soon
Version 1.3, the one on Google Play today, has four themes, all from our Zinda Originals set with living pieces and capture cinematics. Sketchbook puts living pencil characters on paper and plays captures comic-book style, with a KABOOM. Sumi-e Ink is brush and ink with samurai strikes: calm pieces, enso circles and a vermilion seal on every capture. Battle Toons fields cartoon warriors with swords, hammers and wands.
The fourth, My Arena, is the one you assemble yourself: you choose the board, the heroes, the weapons and the sounds. Version 1.4 is built and in testing, and it adds five Classic themes for players who want a normal, quiet board. They are calm and quick, have no cinematics and come with quiet, real-board sounds. They are coming soon and are not on Google Play yet.

When you do go online
Online play is a separate, adults-only part of the game: it needs a sign-in and is for players aged 18 and over. Once you are signed in, you can:
- Play a Quick Match: rated games against real players.
- Play a Friend using a 6-letter code or an invite link.
- Challenge someone from your friends list.
- Enter the ranked Puzzle Rush, which keeps a weekly top 10.
- Compete in the weekly league and on the leaderboards.
We designed the online side to be friendly. Chat uses ready-made messages only, with no free typing, so nobody can type insults at you mid-game. Themes stay personal as well: each player sees the game in their own theme, so you can play in Battle Toons while your opponent plays the same game in Sumi-e Ink.
