Zinda Chess: full-rules chess you can play offline, with no account and no signal
Why we built a chess game whose pieces breathe, blink and panic, and made sure all of it still works on a train with no signal.
Most chess on a phone quietly assumes you are online and signed in. Puzzles arrive from a server, the opponent is a stranger on a connection, and an account screen stands between you and the first move. On a flight, underground, or anywhere with a weak signal, that leaves very little to play, and even with a perfect connection, signing up just to play the computer for ten minutes is friction nobody asked for.
The second problem is quieter. A lot of chess boards are flat and static: a capture means one piece silently disappearing and another taking its square. That suits some players perfectly. For others, especially people who come to chess for fun rather than for rating points, it makes the game feel like homework.
We built Zinda Chess to deal with both. Zinda is a Hindi and Urdu word meaning alive, and our tagline is Chess, but alive. The pieces are animated characters, captures play out as short film scenes, and the game underneath is full-rules chess. Crucially, games against the computer, the campaign, the puzzles and your streaks all work with no internet and no account.
Key takeaways
- Offline play needs no account and no connection: the computer, a 60-level campaign, Pass & Play and 50,000 puzzles.
- The computer opponent spans 6 difficulty tiers and 15 strength levels, so it suits beginners and stronger players alike.
- Pieces are living characters and captures are short cinematic scenes; tap anywhere to skip one, or turn cinematics off entirely.
- Online play is for adults (18+) and uses ready-made chat only, so nobody can type insults.
- It runs on Android 7.0 or newer, is free to download and has no ads today; version 1.3.0 is live.
Everything that works with no account and no signal
We treat offline as a first-class way to play, not a fallback. Open the app with flight mode on and you still get four complete ways to play, none of which asks you to create an account or sign in. Your puzzle streaks keep counting offline too, so a commute without coverage does not break a run you have been building for weeks.
- vs Computer: a full game against the engine, with 6 difficulty tiers and 15 strength levels.
- Campaign: 60 levels across 6 worlds, with 6 bosses.
- Pass & Play: two people sharing one phone, taking turns.
- Puzzle World: Puzzle Path, Daily Puzzle, Streak mode, Rush practice and 6 boss packs, drawn from 50,000 puzzles that work offline.
The online side is separate and opt-in. It needs a signed-in account and is limited to adults, which keeps the offline game the simplest possible thing: install it, open it, play.
Playing the computer, or the person next to you
The computer opponent is where most offline time goes, so we gave it a wide range: 6 difficulty tiers containing 15 strength levels. Someone who has just learned how the knight moves and someone who plays at a club can both find a level that gives them a real game rather than a walkover in either direction. Because it runs on the phone, there is no queue and no waiting for a match to be found.
Pass & Play covers the other common offline situation: two people, one phone, a table between them. It is the same full game, just with both sides controlled from the same screen, which makes it handy for teaching someone at home or settling an argument on a train.
Whichever you choose, the rules are the real rules. Zinda Chess is a complete chess game, not a toy that simplifies the board to make room for animation. The characters and cinematics sit on top of proper chess, and if they ever get in the way, you can turn the cinematics off.
A 60-level campaign with boss fights
Single games are good for ten minutes. For players who want a sense of progress, the campaign gives offline play a shape: 60 levels spread across 6 worlds, with 6 bosses along the way. It is the part of Zinda Chess most like a conventional game, a route you work through rather than a menu you dip into.
Like everything else on the offline side, the campaign needs no account and no connection. That matters more than it sounds: a long journey is exactly when someone wants a structured path to chip away at, and exactly when a sign-in screen or a spinning loader would end the session. The campaign is designed to be picked up and put down on those terms.
50,000 puzzles that do not need a connection
Puzzles are usually the first thing to break when a chess app goes offline, because they are fetched one at a time from a server. In Zinda Chess, the 50,000 puzzles work offline. Puzzle World organises them into several ways to play:
- Puzzle Path, a route through the puzzle collection.
- Daily Puzzle, one to come back for each day.
- Streak mode, for keeping a run going.
- Rush practice, the offline practice side of Puzzle Rush.
- 6 boss packs, themed sets that stand apart from the main path.
Streaks are tracked offline as well, so the habit-forming parts of the puzzle side do not depend on a signal. When you do want to test yourself against other people, the online Ranked Puzzle Rush adds a weekly top 10; that part, like all online play, needs a signed-in adult account.
Pieces that breathe, blink and panic
The name comes from this part. In the Zinda Originals themes, every piece is a character with a face that moves and reacts. Pawns breathe and blink, knights leap, and kings panic when they are in check. In the Sketchbook theme, the pencil-drawn pieces follow your finger with their eyes as you move it across the board. None of it changes the rules; it changes how a position feels to look at.
Captures are where it goes furthest. A capture can play as a small film: slow motion, a camera zoom and a freeze-frame on impact. Each character theme fights in its own way, so a capture in one theme looks nothing like the same capture in another.
We know that is not what every player wants on every move, so it is easy to get out of the way. Tap anywhere to skip a cinematic mid-scene, or switch cinematics off altogether and play the same full game without them.
Themes: four live today, five classic boards on the way
Version 1.3 ships with the four Zinda Originals, the themes with living pieces and capture cinematics. Sketchbook draws its characters in pencil on paper, and its captures are comic-book style, KABOOM included. Sumi-e Ink is calm brush and ink, with samurai strikes, enso circles and a vermilion seal on every capture. Battle Toons is cartoon warriors armed with swords, hammers and wands.
The fourth, My Arena, is the build-your-own theme: you choose the board, the heroes, the weapons and the sounds. It is for players who want the board to look like theirs rather than ours.
Not everyone wants characters. Version 1.4, which is built and in testing, adds five Classic themes: normal chess, calm and quick, with no cinematics and quiet, real-board sounds. They are Classic Wood in maple and walnut, Tournament Green in the cream and green of club boards, Ivory Marble with gold, Midnight for late-night games in dark mode, and Sage & Sand, a soft pastel board with rounded pieces. That takes the total to nine themes once 1.4 reaches Google Play.
Online, for adults, with nothing to type
When you want a human opponent who is not sitting next to you, the online side opens up. It needs a sign-in, and it is for adults only. Offline play remains open to anyone, with no account at all.
- Quick Match: rated games against real players.
- Play a Friend: by a 6-letter code or an invite link.
- Friends list: challenge someone you have already added.
- Ranked Puzzle Rush: with a weekly top 10.
- Weekly league and leaderboards.
We made online play friendly by design. Chat is ready-made messages only, so there is no free text box and nobody can type insults at you. And because themes are personal, each player sees the game in their own theme: you can play in Battle Toons while your opponent sees the same game in Sumi-e Ink. You can also share clips of your best moves.
