Zinda Chess: chess with living pieces that you can play offline, no account needed
What our Android chess game does, who it suits, what runs with no signal at all, what needs an adult account, and which themes are still in testing.
You want a game of chess on your phone. Maybe you are on a train with no signal, maybe you have ten minutes before bed, maybe there are two of you at a table with one phone between you. What you do not want is to create an account, wait for a connection, or settle for a stripped-down version of the game that only looks like chess.
There is a second, quieter problem. A flat board of identical pieces is exactly what some players love and exactly what loses others. If nothing on the board reacts when your king is in check or your rook is taken, the game can feel inert, and a lot of people who know the rules simply stop opening the app.
Zinda Chess is how we answered both. Zinda is a Hindi and Urdu word meaning alive, and our tagline is short: chess, but alive. Every piece is a character, every capture can play like a scene from a film, and the whole game, including 50,000 puzzles and a 60-level campaign, runs offline with no account. It is free on Android 7.0 or newer, with no ads today.
Key takeaways
- The pieces react: pawns breathe and blink, knights leap, kings panic in check, and captures play as short film scenes you can skip with a tap or switch off.
- Offline needs no account and no internet: a computer opponent with 15 strength levels, a 60-level campaign, Pass & Play and 50,000 puzzles.
- Online play is for adults (18+) and covers rated games, friend games by 6-letter code, weekly leagues and a ranked Puzzle Rush, with ready-made chat only.
- Version 1.3.0 is live with four themes; five calm classic boards arrive in 1.4, which is built and in testing but not yet on Google Play.
What a living chess piece actually does
In our character themes, the pieces are not icons on squares. Pawns breathe and blink. Knights leap. Kings panic when they are in check. In the Sketchbook theme the pieces are living pencil characters drawn on paper, and their eyes follow your finger as you move it across the board. The board reacts to what is happening on it, so a check feels like an event rather than a red tint on one square.
Captures go further. A capture can play as a small film: slow motion, a camera zoom, then a freeze-frame on the moment of impact. Each character theme fights in its own way. Sketchbook captures are comic-book style, KABOOM! included. Sumi-e Ink stamps a vermilion seal on every capture. Battle Toons sends in cartoon warriors with swords, hammers and wands. When a move is worth showing off, you can share a clip of it.
None of this is allowed to get in the way of the game. Tap anywhere and the scene is skipped. If you would rather not see cinematics at all, turn them off. Underneath the characters it is real chess with the full rules, not a simplified toy that happens to use a chessboard, so what you learn here carries straight over to any other board.
A complete game with no account and no internet
Offline in Zinda Chess is not a cut-down fallback that unlocks the real thing once you connect. Everything below runs without signing in and without a connection, puzzle streaks included. Install it, open it, and the first game is a tap away.
- vs Computer: 6 difficulty tiers and 15 strength levels.
- Campaign: 60 levels across 6 worlds, with 6 boss fights.
- Pass & Play: two players on one phone.
- Puzzle World: Puzzle Path, Daily Puzzle, Streak mode, Rush practice and 6 boss packs.
The computer opponent is where a lot of offline time goes, so it has range. Six tiers split into fifteen strength levels gives you somewhere comfortable to start and a long way to climb before you run out of opponent. Pass & Play covers the other everyday case: two people sitting together, one phone on the table between them, no accounts and no setup.
Because no account is involved, there is nothing to sign up for before you find out whether you like the game. That matters on a phone where you are deciding in the first minute whether something stays installed.
Fifty thousand puzzles and a campaign with bosses
Puzzle World holds 50,000 puzzles, and every one of them works offline. They come in several forms: Puzzle Path, a Daily Puzzle, Streak mode, Rush practice and six boss packs. You can pick the one that fits the time you have, and because streaks are tracked offline too, a long flight does not break a run you have been building.
Rush practice is the offline side of puzzle speed play. The ranked version, Puzzle Rush, is online and keeps a weekly top 10, so you can practise without a connection and compete once you have one.
The campaign is 60 levels spread over 6 worlds, with 6 bosses to beat. It gives games against the computer a direction. If open-ended games against an engine do not hold your attention for long, a campaign with worlds to clear and boss fights to reach is a different reason to come back tomorrow, and it all runs without an account.
Playing real people, and keeping the chat civil
Online play needs a sign-in, and it is for adults aged 18 and over. Once you are in, there are several ways to find an opponent and several reasons to keep playing them:
- Quick Match: rated games against real players.
- Play a Friend: by a 6-letter code or an invite link.
- Friends list: challenge anyone you have already added.
- Ranked Puzzle Rush: with a weekly top 10.
- Weekly league and leaderboards.
Chat online is ready-made messages only. There is no free-text box, so nobody can type insults at you after a lost game, and you cannot be drawn into an argument mid-match either. We made that choice on purpose: online games are meant to be friendly by design, so a short message to your opponent is always one that was safe to send.
The 6-letter code is the simplest way to play someone you know. One of you creates the game, reads out or sends the code, and the other enters it. An invite link does the same job when you are messaging rather than sitting together.
Themes: three living worlds, a builder, and five quiet boards on the way
Version 1.3 has four themes, all of them Zinda Originals with living pieces and capture cinematics. Sketchbook is pencil characters on paper with comic-book captures. Sumi-e Ink is calm brush-and-ink pieces, enso circles and a vermilion seal on every capture, with samurai strikes. Battle Toons is cartoon warriors with swords, hammers and wands. My Arena lets you build your own: board, heroes, weapons and sounds.
Version 1.4 adds five Classic themes for players who want a normal, quiet board: calm, quick, with no cinematics and with quiet, real-board sounds. Classic Wood is maple and walnut, the board everyone knows. Tournament Green is cream and green, like the boards at a chess club. Ivory Marble is ivory and verde marble with gold. Midnight is a dark mode for late-night games. Sage & Sand is a soft pastel board with rounded pieces. That brings the total to nine.
Online, each player sees the game in their own theme. You can play in Battle Toons while your opponent plays the same game in Sumi-e Ink. Nobody has to agree on a look before the first move, and nobody is stuck with a style they do not enjoy because the other player picked it.
Who Zinda Chess suits
It suits players who know the rules but find a static board flat, and who will play more if the board reacts. It suits anyone who wants a goal when playing the computer, through a campaign with worlds and bosses, and anyone who wants a puzzle habit with streaks that survive a day with no signal. It suits two people sharing one phone at a table, and adults who want rated games and a weekly league without open text chat.
If you want a traditional look, Zinda Chess still works for you today with the cinematics turned off, and the five Classic boards in version 1.4 are aimed squarely at you once they ship. It does not suit iPhone users yet: an iPhone version is planned, but it is not available. The game is in English only.
