Finding specific photos, especially older ones, requires endless scrolling. Furthermore, features like zoom, editing, and even basic deletion can be clunky or absent, leading to frustration and lost memories.

This is compounded by the lack of robust management tools. Many apps offer limited editing capabilities, or worse, modify original files directly, risking permanent data loss. Sharing, organizing into albums, and even recovering accidentally deleted photos are often poorly implemented or entirely missing, forcing users to rely on multiple specialized apps or accept a subpar experience.

Our Googly Player addresses these pain points by offering a comprehensive, intuitive, and powerful photo management experience built from the ground up for Android. It rethinks the core interactions users have with their photo libraries, from browsing and viewing to editing and recovery, ensuring that every interaction is smooth, efficient, and safe.

Date-Grouped Photo Timeline

The main Photos tab in Googly Player moves beyond a simple grid to present your photos chronologically. Images are grouped under clear date headers, such as "Today," "Yesterday," or the specific date they were taken. These headers span the full width of the display, providing a strong visual anchor as you scroll through your library. This structured approach makes it significantly easier to locate photos from particular days or periods.

Our timeline offers dynamic thumbnail resizing. You can pinch to zoom out for smaller thumbnails, revealing more photos per screen, or spread your fingers to zoom in for larger previews, showing fewer images at once. This column count is applied consistently across the entire app, ensuring that thumbnail sizes remain uniform in the timeline, Albums, Favourites, and Trash tabs. Each adjustment provides subtle haptic feedback.

While photos are loading, you’ll see square placeholders that accurately represent the final thumbnail shape. The app also displays a total count of photos, offering a clear overview of your library size. The timeline automatically re-scans for new photos and reflects deletions whenever you navigate back to it, ensuring your view is always up-to-date without manual intervention.

Intuitive Album Management

Googly Player organizes your photos into albums based on how they are stored on your device. This includes standard folders like your camera roll, WhatsApp images, screenshots, and downloads, along with any other custom folders you may have created. Each album is displayed with a clear count of the photos it contains, allowing for quick assessment of content size.

When you tap on an album, you enter the album detail screen. This view inherits any active library filters you might have applied, ensuring consistency in how your photos are presented. Whether you’re viewing your entire library or a specific album, your filtering preferences are respected.

For managing your album visibility, Googly Player introduces a long-press gesture on any album. This action brings up an option to hide the album. Hidden albums are managed centrally, meaning they will disappear not only from the Albums view but also from the main photo timeline, search results, and even the photo viewer’s swipe set, ensuring complete privacy.

Dedicated Favourites Tab

Marking your most cherished photos is simple with Googly Player. You can tap the heart icon associated with any photo, whether you’re viewing it in the main timeline, an album, or the full-screen viewer. This action instantly adds the photo to your dedicated Favourites tab.

The Favourites feature is powered by Room, our local database solution, which guarantees that your marked photos are persistently stored. Even if you clear app data or reinstall the application, your favourites will remain intact, providing a reliable way to keep your best shots readily accessible.

The Favourites tab itself is designed for clarity. It presents all your favourited images in a clean grid. When there are no photos marked as favourites, a clear empty state message is displayed, guiding you on how to start adding photos to this special collection.

Full-Screen Photo Viewer with Advanced Controls

Our photo viewer is built using Android’s ViewPager2 component, enabling smooth swiping left and right to navigate through your entire set of photos, whether from the timeline, an album, or your favourites. This fluid navigation is designed to be immersive and intuitive.

At the core of the viewer is our custom-built ZoomableImageView, developed without relying on third-party libraries. This ensures precise control over zoom and pan gestures. You can pinch to zoom in and out, double-tap to quickly zoom to a specific level, and pan around the image when zoomed in. This offers a highly responsive and familiar photo viewing experience.

The viewer operates in true full-screen mode, automatically hiding system chrome so that nothing distracts from your photo. A rebuilt action bar appears at the bottom, providing quick access to essential functions. This includes a photo counter (e.g., "14 / 320"), a slideshow option to automatically advance through the current set, a share button, a favourite toggle, and a delete option that safely routes items through the Recycle Bin.

Powerful Multi-Select and Bulk Operations

Googly Player streamlines managing large numbers of photos with its robust multi-select functionality. Simply long-press any photo in the timeline, albums, or favourites to enter selection mode. A contextual action bar appears at the top, displaying a live count of how many items you have selected.

Once in selection mode, you gain access to a suite of powerful bulk operations. You can select all photos within the current view, choose to favourite or unfavourite multiple items simultaneously, initiate a bulk share action, or delete a group of photos. A particularly useful batch operation is the ability to apply filters, allowing you to edit multiple photos at once.

When deleting multiple items, Googly Player ensures a consistent and safe experience across all supported Android versions. It correctly handles system delete consent prompts and routes all bulk deletions through the app's Recycle Bin, preventing accidental permanent data loss.

The Robust Recycle Bin

The Recycle Bin is one of Googly Player's standout features, providing a safety net for deleted photos that works reliably across all supported Android versions (API 23+). Unlike many gallery apps that rely on system-level trash which may only function on newer devices, our app implements its own comprehensive solution.

When you delete a photo, Googly Player first copies its data into an app-managed trash directory before removing the original from the MediaStore. If you cancel the system’s delete confirmation prompt, the process is rolled back, preventing orphaned duplicate files. This ensures that your file system remains clean and consistent.

Within the Recycle Bin tab, you can view all deleted items. Each photo can be restored to its original location in the gallery, permanently deleted individually, or the entire bin can be emptied with a confirmation prompt. All items are automatically purged after 30 days, a policy clearly stated in the UI.

Advanced Photo Search and Filtering

Finding specific photos is effortless with Googly Player's full-screen search functionality, accessible directly from the Photos tab header. You can filter your library by photo name or album name, with the search interface providing immediate feedback.

If no photos match your search query, a clear "No photos match X" state is displayed, preventing confusion. This ensures you always know whether your search was successful or if there are simply no results for your criteria. The search is designed to be fast and responsive, quickly scanning your available photo metadata.

Beyond basic search, Googly Player offers extensive sorting and filtering options. Sort photos by name (A-Z, Z-A), date (newest/oldest), size (largest/smallest), or by the number of items for albums. Filters include orientation (All, Portrait, Landscape, Square), file type (dynamically populated based on your device's supported formats like JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WEBP, GIF), and size range. An active-filter pill allows for one-tap clearing, and a hint guides you when results are empty.

Geotagged Photo Map

Explore your photos spatially with the Photo Map feature, accessed via a map icon in the Photos header. This functionality is built on osmdroid and OpenStreetMap, meaning it does not require any proprietary map keys or subscriptions.

The app performs a background scan, reading GPS EXIF data embedded within your photos. For every photo containing location information, a marker is dropped on the interactive map. Tapping on a marker will open the corresponding photo directly in the full-screen viewer, allowing you to see exactly where it was taken.

The Photo Map provides honest status updates throughout its operation. While scanning, it displays "Reading photo locations…". If no photos on your device have location data, it clearly states, "No photos with location data found." This transparency ensures you understand what the app is doing and the results of its scan.

Secure Hidden Albums with Biometric Lock

For ultimate privacy, Googly Player offers a secure Hidden Albums feature. You can long-press any album to initiate the hiding process, with a confirmation dialog to prevent accidental actions. Once hidden, the album and its contents are completely removed from all other views within the app.

This enforced central management means hidden buckets disappear from the main timeline, the Albums grid, photo search results, and the viewer’s swipe set. There is no place where a hidden album can inadvertently be exposed. Access to hidden content is controlled via a BiometricPrompt gate, supporting fingerprint and face unlock, with a device-credential fallback.

If your device does not support biometrics, Googly Player handles this gracefully, offering the device-credential fallback as the primary method. Past the biometric gate, you'll find the Hidden Albums screen, where you can browse and unhide your private collections. The app ensures a secure and seamless experience for managing sensitive photos.

Non-Destructive Photo Editing Suite

The Googly Player photo editor is built on a core principle of non-destructive editing. Every alteration you make—rotations, crop adjustments, color slider changes, effect strengths, or overlay elements—is stored in an immutable `EditState` object. This state is then processed by a single `EditPipeline` for both the live on-screen preview and the final full-resolution save.

This unified approach guarantees that "what you see is exactly what you get." There is no risk of discrepancy between the preview and the final output, as both are rendered using the same code path. Your original photo remains untouched; saving always creates a new JPEG file in the `Pictures/GooglyPlayer` directory, managed via MediaStore on Android 10+ and direct file writes on older versions. Decoding is EXIF-orientation aware and downsampled for previews, but full-resolution for saves.

The editor features five distinct tabs for comprehensive adjustments. The Crop tab includes custom overlays, aspect ratio presets, rotation, flipping, and a free straighten slider. The Filters tab provides a selection of creative looks. Further tabs are dedicated to color adjustments, effects, and overlays, giving you a full suite of tools to enhance your images without compromising the original file.
